Multidimensional Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Drug addiction is a complex illness which is not easily treated. You must understand that all drug addicts were at one time completely drug free. They took drugs, and continued to do until they could not stop. The drugs took over all their behaviors, causing addicts to keep taking drugs even in the face of devastating consequences. Drug and alcohol addiction creates intense cravings for drugs, making it very hard to get addicts into drug treatment. They know they will not be able to buy and use drugs in treatment and they will resist any attempts to get them into alcohol treatment.

Drug rehabilitation treatment is not a simple, one-step process. First, a person may need drug detox, to remove all traces of the drugs from their system. Next, the reason the addict began using drugs in the first place must be discovered and worked upon. There could be multiple reasons, including a mental illness.

Last, drug rehabilitation treatment need s to help a person learn how to maintain a drug-free lifestyle. They have to learn how to resist daily temptations and fight any lingering cravings for drugs. The most effective way to do this is for a person to stay in an inpatient alcohol treatment center for long term care, then only return home once they have the skills to resist the temptations present at home or in their neighborhood. This is the best way for a person to reach their ultimate goal of remaining drug free forever.
